Ischia Ponte
One of Michelangelo's favourite holiday spots and the birthplace of Vittoria Colonna's love sonnets, Ischia Ponte is a fascinating slice of the island of Ischia.
It is home to Guevara's Tower, known locally as Michelangelo's tower, since this is where he stayed during his island visit. Legend whispers that the close relationship between the famous artist and Ischia's own poetess, Vittoria Colonna, was a significant inspiration behind her writing.
Ischia Ponte also hosts the Museum of the Sea, as well as the medieval costume parade of Saint Alessandro. It is framed by the 'pilastri', a 17th century aqueduct much like those built in the Roman era, and of course, the imperious, the notably compelling Aragonese Castle.
Originally built as a fort in 474 A.C., the castle came of age during the Renaissance, under the rule of the Bourbons. It is a magnificent array of stone edifices and towers climbing up the rockface of the islet opposite the town. Joined by the 'ponte', a long, manmade bridge, the castle connects emotionally with its visitors for its powerful and omniscient presence. As you explore the municipality of Ischia, you soon discover the many varied angles of the castle and become captive to its engaging force.
A fiery vision of the castle explodes on the night of the Festival of Saint Anna, an important and animated celebration, not only for the town but for all of the island's municipalities. Months ahead, each part of the island starts planning, building its boat to present a special aspect of its life and history. Festival night begins with a swimming race to determine the order of the boats' parade. It ends with fireworks and a light display from the castle, the boats judged by the crowd and official guests.
The Festival of Saint Anna draws together the diverse elements that form Ischia Ponte. Located in the old town centre, it highlights the important role of the sea, of religion, of cultural events, all under the auspice of its protector, the castle.
Ever since construction of the castle, Ischia Ponte has played a central role in the political and intellectual development of the island. The castle itself is now a museum, park and art gallery. Ischia Ponte, meanwhile, is a lively hub. It boasts the main shopping districts of Via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna. From Ischia Ponte taxis, busses, boats and rentals connect you to any part of the island and the islands beyond. Spas, gyms and tennis courts are all within walking distance. Concerts and outdoor events speckle the calendar and accommodation of all levels can be found.
Mixing the ambience of yesterday with the comfort of today, Ischia Ponte is an exceptional holiday location.
